The Benefits Of Godly Meditation

We’ve probably all experienced times when shortly after reading a passage from the Bible, we can’t remember what it said.

The Scriptures were given to us by God so we could know Him. Although no one can fully comprehend all that is written by an infinite God, He has made it possible for Christians to understand His Word. Yet comprehension is not to be an end in itself. In order to be transformed by the Word, we must also apply what it says to our lives.

The whole issue of meditation upon the word of God is far more involved than what most people think. Most people think meditation means that I read it quietly then I go on my way. That is not what meditation is. Biblical meditation is one of the most important things you can do.

Meditation is not just reading a passage and moving on. Meditation is thinking, asking, giving, praying, whatever God may be saying to you. So, it involves far more than just reading it. It involves prayerful application… Lord what are you saying to me personally.

Knowing that every believer should read Scripture, sometimes we treat it as a duty to be checked off rather than a valuable opportunity to commune with God.

Although consistent Bible reading is important, our minds must be engaged and focused in order to benefit from it.

In other words, we need to learn to meditate on God’s Word, not just read the words.

Therefore, as we read, we must think deeply about God’s Word and ask the Lord to clarify it for us and show us any words of encouragement, warning, or command. The goal is not simply to get through a Bible reading plan. Psalm 104:34 says,

Psalm 104:34 (NIV)

May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the LORD.

It’s about the power of meditation in the life of a believer. We need to listen to God and we need to do our best to apply it to our heart because I’m sure God has something to say to all of us. Amen

What are the benefits of meditation?

#1 – It quiets our spirits. When we are troubled, God’s Word calms our hearts, assuring us of His faithfulness, love, and sovereignty over our lives.

 Meditation will call you down

 Reduce conflict in your life

 Where there is conflict; there is no peace

Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV)

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  7  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

#2 – It enlightens our minds. To see our situations through God’s eyes, we need to learn to think like He does, and this is only possible when we understand His ways and desires as revealed in His Word. In the process, He gives us an immediate sense of peace and confidence in Him so that we can trust Him.

#3 – It increases our energy. In moments of weakness, we find strength in God’s Word. He knows exactly what we need. God loves you; give Him time to express that love whatever that love is needed in your life

 When we are inadequate in ourselves, the Lord gives us His strength.

 Ex. preaching every Sunday; encourage your yourself

 God knows how to give us the energy we need because He knows what the need is and is unlimited

 God is a personal God; He knows when we are worn out, tired, discouraged, drained, about to lose our minds (don’t push me cause I’m close to the edge)

Philippians 4:19 (NKJV)

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

#4 – It purifies our hearts. As we meditate on the Word, the Holy Spirit exposes sins in our lives that we need to confess, repent of, and receive forgiveness and cleansing from the Lord

1 John 1:9 (NKJV)

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

#5 – It enlarges our view of God. Meditation on Scripture reveals aspects of His nature that we may not have seen before. His love in saving sinners, His capacity to forgive those who don’t deserve it, and His care and interest in every detail of our lives assure us that He is trustworthy and good.

#6 – It increases our love for God. The more we get to know the Lord through His Word, the greater will become our devotion to Him. Certain passages of Scripture will inspire us to love Him more and will become lifelong reminders of His love, care, and provision for us.

Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

 The key to meditation is for you to meditate upon the word of God because there will be times that arise in your life, situations and circumstances that God will take you back to a passage that you read and you will say “Yes Lord, thank you!” because at the moment you shut everything out, remembered and listened what God said to you and your faith skyrockets

 Meditation is a concentration upon God

#7 – It strengthens our faith. Our trust in God grows as we learn of His faithfulness in His Word and experience it in our lives through answered prayer.

#8 – It increases our awareness of God’s presence. Time alone with the Lord makes us more sensitive to His constant presence with us and His work in us.

Mark 1:35 (NKJV)

Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight (He knew better than to wait until 8:00), He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.

 If Jesus, the Son of God needed time alone with His Father to pray and meditate, we certain do as well.

 The most important thing you and I can do daily for our life is to spend time meditating; heart talk

 How long you take is between you and God

 Some may say that they don’t know if God will speak to their heart

 Question is… why don’t you think so?

 Maybe you have guilt in your life or some sin in your life and you think you are unworthy

 You may be the one He is really working on

 He is just waiting on you to “come and listen to Him.”

 When you trust Him as you Lord and Savior, God begins to speak to your heart immediately!

 If you want the best, then you will make meditation a priority in your life. The most important thing I can bdo is listen to God through the reading His word.

 Meditation the most important activity in the life of a follower of Jesus.
