They’re Playing Our Song

It might be a song on the radio; it might be a song you made up. It might be a song nobody else ever heard, or it might be a Top 40 hit. Whatever the tune or the words, somehow it captures the love between you and that special someone. Ever since people have been singing, I suppose couples in love have said, “Listen, sweetheart! They’re singing our song.”

How did it become “our song?” Did the composer get with us and say, “Give me an idea of exactly what you want to say to this person you love. I’ll write a song just for you two lovebirds.” Probably not. More likely, it’s a song written by somebody you’ve never talked to at all. Yet somehow, that song captures something beautiful and special about your relationship with your beloved.

This morning, I want to look at a song that King David might call “our song.” This song doesn’t express the love between himself and some beautiful Israelite’s maiden. It’s a song that expresses the love between himself and his Lord. The tune has not been preserved for us, but in these words, you can hear the heart of a man who loves God, and you can hear the love God has for him. David could easily say about 2 Samuel 22, “Lord, this is our song.”

But what’s even better is the fact that everybody in this room can make this song their song. David writes this song not just for himself, but for all of us who want to enjoy loving and being loved by the Lord. I want us to hear this song today, and make it your song, and my song, between us and the God who loves us.

2 Samuel 22:29-31

In a world filled with uncertainty and unpredictability, it’s comforting to know that there is one thing that never fails – God’s faithfulness. Trusting God is not always easy, but it is always worth it. The Bible reminds us that God’s ways are perfect, and His word is proven. He is our rock, our refuge, and our savior.

#1 – When our days are dark, the Lord is our only light

David wrote: “You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light.” (2 Samuel 22:29)

Have you ever walked through the woods with a lamp or a lantern? Does it provide enough light to make it seem like daytime?
No, it only provides enough light for us to see what is just ahead; just enough to see where to take our next step. The same is true of the light we receive from God.

At times we stumble along, trying to peer into the darkness ahead, but God only gives us enough light so we can see to take the next step. That’s all the light that God gives, because in reality that’s all we need.

That’s what David is saying in these verses, “You are my lamp, Lord and You give me just enough inches to let me see the next step, and that’s all You give me, but that’s enough.” You give me enough light to help take away my fear of the darkness – you are my lamp – my only light.

So many times, we think that we have to be strong, but the truth of the matter is that God is the one who is strong, and when we are weak, He can make us strong.

This is what the Apostle Paul discovered in his experience with the Lord. Paul wrote: “To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ There I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)

So that’s the secret: “God’s power is perfected in our weakness.” God says, in essence, “My power is best displayed when you are weak.” As I said, we want to be strong, but we are never stronger than when God is working through our weakness.

#2 – God is perfect, so we don’t have to be

As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.” (2 Samuel 22:31)
Today, I want to share with you a powerful truth that has brought comfort and hope to countless believers throughout history. It’s a truth that can bring peace to your stormy nights and strength to your weary souls. It’s the truth that if you trust God, He will never fail you.

In Psalm 23, David writes about the goodness and faithfulness of God. He says, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me.” David is saying that even in the most difficult times, he trusts God to be with him and to guide him.

Trusting God is not always easy. It requires us to let go of our control and our understanding. It requires us to have faith in His sovereignty and His goodness. But when we do, we can experience the comfort and peace that David writes about.

The Bible is full of stories of people who trusted God and experienced His faithfulness. Abraham trusted God and was willing to sacrifice his son Isaac. Joseph trusted God and was able to forgive his brothers who had wronged him. Mary trusted God and became the mother of Jesus.

In each of these stories, we see that trusting God is not a guarantee that we won’t face difficult circumstances. But it is a guarantee that God will be with us, guiding us and comforting us through those difficulties.

So, how can we trust God like David did? First, we must know His character. We must understand that God is good, loving, and faithful. Second, we must surrender our control and our understanding. We must be willing to let go and let God be God. Third, we must have faith in His sovereignty. We must believe that He is in control, even when we don’t understand.

If you are going through a difficult time today, I want you to know that God is with you. He is your rod and your staff, comforting and guiding you. Trust Him, and He will never fail you.

“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O God, endures forever.” (Psalm 138:8)

When we trust God, we can be confident that He will fulfill His purpose in our lives. His love endures forever, and He is always working for our good. As Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Trusting God with all our heart requires us to let go of our own understanding and acknowledge Him in all our ways. When we do, He promises to make straight our paths and guide us in His will.

Yet God waits for us. He patiently waits for us to finally learn that He is the One.

He is the One who is our light and our salvation.

He is the One who hears our cry.

He is the One who lifts us up from the pit.

He is the One who places our feet upon the rock,

He is the One who gives us clarity where there is clutter

He is the One who proves Himself strong in our weakness.

He is the One who sheds light in our darkness.

He is the One who is our hope in uncertainty.

God must be allowed to be the Centerpiece of our lives – our Rock and Anchor.

Is David singing your song this morning? Can you honestly look at your relationship with Jesus Christ and truthfully say: He is my Savior—He is my Righteousness—He is my Strength?

Today, if the Holy Spirit is tugging at your heart, and you need to make sure everything is right between you and the Lord, then I urge you to do something today. I urge you to come to Christ, just as you are, and ask Him to save you, ask Him to give you His righteousness, ask Him to be your strength. Your heart can sing the same song of love to the Lord, if you will come to Him right now.
